The light is turning grey as the last of the village residents scurry through the front doors of Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; Rosmerta, heading up a straggling train of tenders and shopkeeps, most of whom - the reason for their tardiness - are laden down with bags. This doesn't endear them to anyone at first, until they're stopped on the castle steps and the contents are revealed to be not personal possessions, but flasks of butterbeer, simple rolls and scones from Puddifoot's, and as much Honeyduke's chocolate as could be carried.

They're waved inside with backslaps and slightly heartened grins, pointed towards the Room of Requirement (Dumbledore's express orders - anyone not fighting is to stay here, under guard).

Outside, the atmosphere soon tenses again, and it's not long in spreading through the castle, particularly anywhere there are north-facing windows. In the distance, nestled between the dark masses of two harsh Scottish hills, there is a faint red-orange glow against the dusk; that's where Hogsmeade used to be.

And between there and the castle - almost to the gates now, though with a long trek across the lawns afterwards - another glow. Except this one, this one is a sickly green, and comes not from one source, but from many, far too many wands, held aloft above a solid swarm of black robes. Behind these tight-serried ranks, a still larger horde crowds the narrow roadway, some figures slow and shambling, some switching freely between two feet and all fours, and some, silhouetted against the ghostly light, horrifyingly, stomach-clenchingly huge.

It seems strangely cold - colder than it should be, for a midsummer's evening. There are slow tendrils of mist sneaking and snaking their way out from the Forbidden Forest.

It's nearly night.

It's nearly time.

On the ground, for the most part, it's silent. Of what numbers they have, most are arrayed here, in front of the castle. It's a simple enough arrangement - there are a few short trenches, a few built-up mounds of earth and sandbags to provide cover, nothing more than what could be prepared in the short time given. Not that it matters - and none of the Aurors on the ground think it does. To a man (or woman, or being), they know that theirs will not be a battle fought with tactics and scalpel-sharp strategy, but of numbers, strength, and will.

On the first count, they are outdone, and the creeping mist from the Forest suggests the imminent arrival of forces set to tackle the third.

And luck.



From behind the lines, there comes an ear-splitting creak and then a thunderous wooden crash; the great doors of Hogwarts slamming shut.

High up above the grounds of Hogwarts, all the competent flyers that the Ministry and the Order could gather hover quietly on their brooms, the only talk the occasional low command, or muttered analysis of the weather.

(Clear enough, from what most of them can tell, although nobody likes that mist coming off of the Forest, and there's a steady wind blowing, and you never know what it'll carry with it.)

From a height, the air corps cons its vantage, sending a figure flitting down every few minutes with updates on the enemy's ground forces; how many, how they're arrayed, who may be facing who - or what.

And gradually, as they draw closer, it becomes easier to pick out the darker shapes against the sky that make up Voldemort's airborne troops. Flyers, on the whole, are not very easy to come by; here, at least, they seem to be more or less evenly matched.

Even over the shrill whistle of the wind, the slamming of the colossal front doors of the castle is clearly audible.

Other than the airborne forces, nobody has a clearer view of the approaching horde than the bombers, nestled firmly atop the castle battlements which offer the best vantage - and thus the best aim - over the grounds. The occasional update delivered from astride a hovering broom isn't exactly necessary, but it's appreciated nonetheless.

They're spread out, the trainees hand-picked by Bernard from those Aurors with the highest marks in Muggle Weaponry, evenly spaced along the north ramparts with small groups clustered in the spaces provided by the tops of the occasional towers. There's more than one way in and out of Hogwarts - anyone who's spent even a day inside the castle, where staircases rearrange themselves and corridors appear and disappear at random could guess at that. Not only is there more than one, they might hazard, there's likely to be dozens. And if anyone knows them all, it's Albus Dumbledore.

Of course, for all the secret entranceways known only to the headmaster of Hogwarts, there are a very few known on a slightly wider basis. This, perhaps, might explain why the statue of the humpbacked witch is not the sole shadowy figure biding its time in the third-floor corridor of Hogwarts.

Even here, the muffled rumble of the doors sliding shut is - just about - audible.

As most other places in the castle at this moment, the Room of Requirement and the corridor outside are deathly silent - though not, in this case, from want of people. The room itself is as big as it needs to be, yet still manages to appear cramped, families and individuals huddling down amidst piles of whatever possessions they saw fit to bring with them. There's barely three square inches of floor to spare, and yet there's not a sound to be heard, even from the youngest of children.

Everybody is too busy listening.

Outside the room, the few guards flanking the door and each end of the corridor are no different; they daren't make a sound more than they need to, lest they miss any. But the Room of Requirement is deep within Hogwarts castle. Here, there is no way to know whether fighting has begun.
